Special Needs Scholarship Application Window Open Now Through November 15

For families of children with special needs, the Jon Peterson Special Needs Scholarship Program is a lifeline. It allows families to get their children an education that meets their needs and is tailored specifically to their unique learning style. Thanks to this scholarship, thousands of Ohio students with special needs are getting the individualized education they deserve.

Any Ohio student in kindergarten through twelfth grade with a current IEP is eligible to apply for a Jon Peterson Special Needs Scholarship. Eligible families can now apply for a scholarship during the second application window which closes on November 15. Scholarships are renewable through high school graduation or the student’s 22nd birthday, whichever comes first.

Scholarships can be used toward tuition at a participating school and/or toward costs at a participating private service provider. Families have the option to mix and match services from different providers allowing them to create a customized education for their child. Currently, more than 290 providers across the state are accepting the scholarship.

A child’s scholarship amount is based on his or her special needs. Current scholarship amounts range from $7,000 to $27,000.

To apply, families should check the list of participating schools and providers in their area and choose the one(s) that would best fit their child’s specific needs. Once they find the right fit, families can reach out to the school or provider and begin their application process. If accepted, the school or provider will apply for the scholarship on the child’s behalf. Families should keep in mind that these steps must be completed by the deadline on November 15.

Students who are awarded a scholarship during the current application window will be able to begin using the scholarship in January. For families who miss this application window, there will be another opportunity to apply during the next application window, which opens on February 1. Students who are awarded a scholarship during this application window will be able to begin using the scholarship in July.
